On January 18th, new players joining the professional baseball team, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, visited the Minami Sanriku 311 Memorial.

<From the official website : 2025 new recruits visit the area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Minamisanriku Town)

As part of the training for new players which is conducted every year before the team camp, the group toured the Minami Sanriku San San Shopping Street, Reconstruction Memorial Park, the former disaster prevention office building and other attractions, focusing on the memorial, and was guided by Mayor Sato Hitoshi and staff from our consulate.

In the learning program, participants watched "Can You Save Your Life at That Time?", a program that taught them about the testimony of a person who was a junior high school student at the time of the disaster. They watched with serious eyes and learned about what kind of disasters could occur in their hometowns and in Sendai, where they are starting their new lives.

This year, we also have a player from Taiwan. After the learning program, the mayor introduced the connection between Minamisanriku and Taiwan and the exchanges that have taken place so far.

After the memorial, we visited the former disaster prevention office building, a relic from the earthquake, and the mayor spoke about his experiences at the time of the earthquake.

Rui Muneta, who joined the team as the first draft pick, commented, "When I first heard about the situation at the time of the disaster and the stories of those who were actually affected, I strongly felt that our current situation is not something to be taken for granted."

Thank you to all the players for visiting us this year.
