The Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on January 1st left me with an unbearable feeling when I witnessed the devastation that struck New Year's gatherings and the extremely difficult life of the residents as evacuees. I remembered the days of the Great East Japan Earthquake as if it were yesterday, and as I learned about the plight of the people in the affected areas, I was reminded of the ways in which residents pooled their wisdom and came up with ideas to support each other in order to overcome the difficulties at that time.
We thought that we might be able to be of some help to the people of Noto and visitors to the museum by sharing the experiences of Minami Sanriku, so we quickly asked the townspeople to share their wisdom and ingenuity from back then.
There will also be an exhibit in which visitors are asked questions to imagine situations following an actual disaster, and then they write their answers on sticky notes and paste them onto a worksheet to create their own work.
We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for people to think about disaster prevention as something that concerns them personally, and that it will help them prepare for natural disasters, which could strike at any time.
We look forward to your visit.
